Our tips for cleaning terracotta
These beautiful terracotta plant pots add a Mediterranean flair to any garden. However, over time, these beautiful Italian classics are susceptible to verdigris, limescale, or flower residue, even if the pots are otherwise very robust. Terracotta is a natural material, and its open pores allow bacteria and limescale to easily build up.
What is the best way to clean terracotta?
There are various household remedies that work very well. The simplest is to make a mixture of 9 parts water and 1 part vinegar or citric acid and use it to clean the bucket. A coarse root brush is best for this.
Alternatively—if you have to repot anyway, for example—you can soak the pots in water overnight and clean them thoroughly with potato peels. The starch contained in the potatoes is an incredibly effective cleaner. Don't throw away the potato water from the night before; simply use it for cleaning. You'll be surprised.
